Every year, at least 5.9 million donkeys are slaughtered for their skins. Their hides are boiled down to make ejiao — a so-called “traditional medicine” that falsely claims to have anti-ageing powers.
But the truth behind it is pure horror.
Donkeys are hunted, stolen, and beaten, then forced onto overcrowded trucks with no food or water. Many collapse and die before ever reaching the slaughterhouses.
Those who survive are bludgeoned, stabbed, and even SKINNED ALIVE — their screams echoing through filthy, unregulated killing sites.
In Kenya alone, it’s estimated that over 400 donkeys are slaughtered every single day for their hides. Donkeys en route to slaughter are slashed with machetes, starved for days, and have their legs broken so they can’t run. Many don’t survive the journey.
And all this cruelty? For just £96 per skin — the price of unimaginable suffering. Even after an Africa-wide ban, this brutal trade continues in secret every night.
